Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM

The Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM Traveler is a very solid and accurate GPS that is very reasonably priced. It comes with neat features for preparing and planning vacations. TourDirector helps you navigate to neat attractions in cities you are unfamiliar with. It also has some Wi-Fi capabilities which makes updating maps much easier. Magellan includes lifetime map updates and traffic data which is great, because the GPS will always be up to date. It also features traffic tools allow you to plan for the best route possible depending on traffic or construction.

Advantages

The Traveler features lifetime map updates and traffic data. The TourDirector feature lets users browse local attractions, set itineraries, and optimize travel time from the unit’s menus. Wi-Fi connectivity allows users to browse the Web and update the unit’s software.

Disadvantages

When using the TourDirector destinations can only be viewed based on proximity. You cannot change this setting to rating or popularity which are often places you want to check out. The web browser is somewhat slow and is not ideal for long periods of browsing the web.

Design

The RoadMate 5175T-LM is built in the same slate configuration that many other GPS models share. It has a 5 inch resistive touch screen that has WVGA resolution. There is only one physical control which is the power button. At the bottom you will find a Mini-USB port which is used for charging and for updating maps and directions through the computer. There is also a microSD slot for extended memory. It comes loaded with maps of the U.S, Puerto Rico, and Canada. The Magellan Roadmate Traveler uses both portrait and landscape orientation. The Traveler comes with a suction cup mounting cradle for the windshield or dashboard. It also comes with a 12 volt Mini-USB adapter that charges while you are driving. Also included is an extendable USB cable for connecting the GPS to a computer for updates.

Features

The RoadMate 5175T-LM Traveler has many core features that Magellan’s entire RoadMap lineup has. There are buttons for OneTouch, volume control, travel information, and traffic updates. It gives spoken turn-by-turn directions with highway lane guidance and speed limit alerts. Magellan’s OneTouch menu has 15 shortcuts to commonly accessed destinations. The Traveler also comes with lifetime map updates which can be downloaded from Magellan’s content manager software on the internet. Traffic data comes wirelessly via the RDS-TMC brand which updates on major highways and major streets. You can also browse the internet wirelessly on a basic browser thanks to this model being Wi-Fi enabled. The touch screen has low resolution and is somewhat unresponsive which makes it difficult to browse.

Conclusion

The Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM Traveler is a very accurate GPS that can help get you from A to B without any trouble. The TourDirector is a great feature that allows you to experience new places and attractions based on its advice. The Wi-Fi connectivity and Web browser are great to have, but they are in desperate need of finesse as they are unreliable and slow. Most people will prefer to use their smartphone for internet access, especially after testing out this model. Overall, it is a good operating GPS if you use it solely for maps and directions. If you are looking for a higher-end GPS model that has reliable Wi-Fi and internet browsers this is not the right model for you.
